Difference Between Oils and Tinctures? Why Switch Over?

Cannabis has a lot of delivery methods, but two popular options that often get mixed up are oils and tinctures. Let’s break down the real differences, why switching to tinctures is the preferred way to go, and how each is better for your needs.

What Are Cannabis Oils?

Cannabis oils are made by extracting cannabinoids like THC or CBD from the plant and mixing them into a carrier oil—typically MCT, olive oil, or hemp seed oil. They’re a great option for adding to food, taking in capsule form, or even using topically. The oil-based approach means they’re fat-soluble, so they take longer to absorb, especially when taken orally.

For slower, longer-lasting relief, oils are a good fit. However, they require your body to digest the oil before cannabinoids hit your system, so relief can take 30–90 minutes.

Cannabis oils, especially when taken orally, can potentially have an impact on digestion due to their fat content. Since the cannabinoids are mixed with carrier oils like MCT or olive oil, your body needs to break down these fats, which might not be ideal for everyone, particularly those with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues.

For some people, digesting oils can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort—things like bloating, cramping, or even diarrhea. This is more common with larger doses or frequent use, as your body has to work harder to process the fat. If you already have issues like IBS or other digestive concerns, oils might not be the best choice for oral consumption.

In contrast, tinctures avoid this issue by being alcohol-based and absorbed directly under the tongue, bypassing the digestive system almost entirely. This makes them a gentler option for those who experience stomach troubles with oils.

What Are Cannabis Tinctures?

This is Dad's Grass. They are a hemp derived Cannabis brand. They offer tinctures as shown above and they also provide jonts. They also have a CBD line of joints known as Mom's Grass!

Cannabis tinctures, as I mentioned, are alcohol-based extracts. These are made by steeping the plant in alcohol, which pulls out the cannabinoids and terpenes. Unlike oils, tinctures are absorbed more quickly because alcohol enters the bloodstream faster, especially when placed under the tongue.

Tinctures are often a better choice for faster relief—whether for pain, anxiety, or general stress. You can also microdose more easily with tinctures by controlling the dosage drop by drop. Not only that but add to a tasty cocktail and it will blend right in! That is to say, be responsible with your dosing and make sure you are staying put if you are mixing together.

Why Switch From Oils to Tinctures?

If you're already using oils but aren't happy with the onset time or dosing precision, and you find yourself with an upset stomach, tinctures might be worth trying. Here’s why you might want to switch:

  • Faster Absorption: Tinctures are absorbed faster under the tongue (typically 15–30 minutes). For someone dealing with anxiety or sudden pain, this quicker onset can make a world of difference.
  • More Precise Dosing: With tinctures, you can fine-tune your dose down to the drop. This makes them ideal for microdosing or anyone who wants to be specific with their intake.
  • Higher Bioavailability: Alcohol-based tinctures offer more efficient absorption, meaning you get more cannabinoids into your system per dose compared to oils. This can make your product last longer while delivering more effective results.

Oils vs. Tinctures: Use Cases

  • When to Use Oils:
Oils are great for cooking and topicals. They blend easily into food or drinks and are ideal for anyone who doesn’t mind a slower onset time. Oils are also a solid choice for longer-lasting effects.
  • When to Use Tinctures:
If you need fast-acting relief, especially for anxiety or pain, tinctures are the way to go. They also work well for discreet dosing—just a few drops under the tongue, and you’re good to go without anyone knowing.

The Science: Natural vs. Synthetic

Now, let’s talk about why switching from synthetics like benzodiazepines to natural options like cannabis tinctures might be beneficial. Benzos are synthetic and often prescribed for anxiety, but they come with the risk of dependency and permanent changes to brain chemistry over time. Tinctures, especially CBD-dominant ones, provide a plant-based alternative that interacts with your endocannabinoid system naturally—without the long-term brain alterations. If you read enough of my articles, you will find I am largely against benzodiazepines…

Take Turns with Tinctures

If you’re looking for faster relief, more control over your dose, and a more natural approach to managing anxiety or pain, tinctures could be a better fit. Oils have their place, but tinctures offer unique benefits that can help you fine-tune your cannabis experience.
